Fiesta and Public Holidays

Below are listed the local events, fiestas and public holidays that we are aware of. Most fiestas will normally take place on the same dates each year, however, the programme of events is often not finalised until a few days beforehand:

January 1 New Years Day - Public Holiday
5 The arrival of the Three Kings and worship of the baby Jesus.
6 Feast of The Epiphany - Public Holiday
16 - 17 Fiesta of Sant Antoni Abat the patron saint of animals. The event begins with the lighting of small bonfires, which the local residents sit around and sing traditional songs and roast "botifarrons", which are locally made blood sausages. The following day there is a colourful parade, culminating in the blessing of the animals.
March 1 Balearics Day - Public Holiday
Lent   The Carnival Fiestas begin on the Thursday before Lent (Dijous Llarder), and continue until Ash Wednesday (Dimecres de Cendra) with street parades and fancy-dress parties all over the island.
Easter   The festivities of Easter begin on Palm Sunday when palm and olive branches are blessed. On Good Friday a parade takes place through the streets of the town of Andratx. On Easter Sunday there is a procession to celebrate Jesus' meeting with the Virgin Mary and finally, on Easter Monday a pilgrimage to the Tower of Sant Elm takes place.
May 1 May Day - Public Holiday
June   Nearby Santa Ponsa is famous throughout the island for hosting two big Fiestas every year. The first is called the Rocio, and this is a five day Andalucian Religious Festival, which is held during the first weekend in June each year. In keeping with most religious festivals in Mallorca these days, it becomes a long weekend of food, drink and music, along with a little bit of praying! The Rocio does attract a large number of people to the town each year, and there is always a great selection of side shows and stalls.
24 Fiesta of Saint John the Baptist the patron saint of Calvia. In Calvia town a mass is celebrated, and the inhabitants of over 75 years of age are invited to have a dish of almond ice cream with an ensaimada.
July 25 Fiesta of Saint James. This fiesta is the most talked about in Calvia, and for a whole week activities take place at different venues in the area.
August 15 Ascension Day - Public Holiday
September   Fiesta of King James in Santa Ponsa has now grown into a two week celebration that usually starts around the 1st of September, to commemorate the landing and conquering of Mallorca by Jaime I in 1229. He and his troops landed at Santa Ponsa, and today the spot is marked by a stone cross on the southern headland not far from the nautical club. The fiesta ends on the second weekend of the month with a grand procession through the streets, followed by a mock battle between the Moors and Christians on the beach on the Saturday. That night there is then a rock concert from 9pm until 4am, which has in the past attracted many top international acts. The whole fiesta ends with a grand fireworks display at midnight on the Sunday, the likes of which you've never seen before.
October 12 Fiesta Nacional de Espaņa - Public Holiday
November 1 All Saints Day - Public Holiday
December 6 Constitution Day - Public Holiday
8 Immaculate Conception - Public Holiday
25 Christmas Day - Public Holiday
26 St Stephen Day - Public Holiday
